I am a backyard landscape do it yourself hobbyist. As a matter of fact, one of the reasons that I first bought a house was because I wanted to be able to play with backyard landscape design. I have had so many backyard landscaping ideas since I was very small, but I have never gone on to do any of them. You see, when I was a kid I used to love to imagine what my dream house would be like. Of course back then, my backyard landscape ideas were not that well developed. Basically, most of my backyard landscape designs were pretty over the top. I wanted to have a giant backyard fountain that you could swim in, a backyard basketball court – you get the idea. When I was a kid, my backyard landscape design scheme centered around making the biggest, best playground that a child had ever had.
We are no longer so limited by climate zone. In a matter of a single weekend, you can create a sanctuary that will pay dividends for your solitude, your pride, and it will actually increase your selling appeal when you decide to sell the home and move on. We have seen cases where the backyard waterfall was the deciding factor to a buyer wanting to purchase a home. So, when you consider the accents a backyard waterfall gives you, while you live there, it pays for itself a hundred times over when you decide to sell.
Grapes are wonderful backyard landscaping climbing plant choices for trellises or a sunny wall. Varieties are available that will thrive in very cold climates. With a little care and forethought to location, I could grow seedless grapes in frigid Wyoming winters 30 years ago. You now have numerous hardy choices of fine eating, canning, preserve, and wine choice available almost anywhere. If you live in mild climates, orange, lemon, and lime trees are gorgeous additions to your backyard landscaping. Peaches, apricots, and nectarines can be grown almost anywhere anymore; it really is amazing. Just choose a reputable long standing nursery or nursery catalog with a guarantee and long standing reputation when making your choices.
The exotic, tropical look of your backyard resort will be achieved by combining a wide variety of shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Banana plants with their large dramatic leaves, beautiful foliage plants like coleus and gingers, open and airy ornamental grasses, beautiful climbing vines, and tropical blooming plants all have a place. What may surprise you is that there is also a place for many of our more cold-hardy and traditional landscape plants. Uniformity and normality are out; randomness and whimsy are in.
